HEARTBEAT RADIO COMMEMORATES

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY  2011

This year, 2011, marks the centenary for International Women’s Day and the theme as designated by the United Nations is “Equal Access to Education, Training, Science and Technology – pathway to decent work for women.”

Most recent statistics showed that two thirds of the world’s 876 million illiterates are women and that there is no country in the world where women’s wages are equal to those of men. Up to 1995, global statistics indicated that women own approximately 1 percent of the world’s land and that everyday 6000 girls are genitally mutilated – more than 200 000 per year.

“Although several elements of our programming include features and interactive shows that seek to empower women and even men, the month of March will highlight the alarming statistics locally and globally.”  Founder, Kiran Maharaj said that as the World’s First 24/7 radio station for women “we have a commitment to the continued enhancement of our listeners’ lives and their communities and an active interest in our young women in particular.”

As part of the activities on and off the air in March, Heartbeat Radio will be participating in the 10th Annual Celebration Breakfast hosted by the Interclub of Trinidad and Tobago (an amalgamation of women’s clubs throughout the country) to be held at the Hyatt Regency in Port-of-Spain on 1st March 2011.

The alliance of these organizations annually shows the significance of the issue of the advancement of women. “Today’s little girls and young ladies are tomorrow’s mothers, entrepreneurs and leaders.  It is important that we set an example and lay a solid foundation for them because in the long-run society’s norms will be their ultimate responsibility.”
